A 100 Score In Google Pagespeed Insights Is Not The Goal!

We’ve optimized 5000+ sites for speed and Core Web Vitals since we started WP Speed Fix in 2016.

When Google introduced Core Web Vitals (CWV) in 2020 it was a game changer. No longer is guesswork required when it comes to site speed. With Core Web Vitals, Google now tracks the real speed that users are experiencing when they visit your website.

Every Google Chrome Browser and other browsers powered by the Google Chrome “Chromium” engine now collects the load speed of each page on a website and reports it back to Google.

This dataset is know as the Chrome User Experience Report (CRUX) and is what’s used to report on site speed and CWV metrics.

Passing Core Web Vitals Is The Goal

Core Web Vitals is the actual real speed users are experiencing and it makes things like Pagespeed Score and GTMetrix grades obsolete.

In fact it’s possible to have a 100 score on desktop and mobile on Pagespeed Insights and be completely failing the Core Web Vitals Benchmarks.

Site speed is dynamic quality. Each page load will have a different speed depending on the visitors physical location, the load on your hosting at the time, the traffic source the user came from and even the wifi signal strength on their device.

Cheating Pagespeed Scores Won’t Help Pass Core Web Vitals or Your SEO Rankings

Many providers offering site speed optimization will guarantee 100 scores in Pagespeed Insights but this doesn’t mean you’ll pass CWV.

Often these scores are achieved by only partially loading the website and then only loading the rest of the page when the user interacts with it. This almost always gives a 100 score in PSI but it’s essentially cheating the test.

Worse still, this type of cheating can actually make your site slower as it introduces delays into loading heavy elements like javascript tracking and can also ruin your SEO as Google and other SEO crawlers don’t actually see the full version of your website.

Failing Core Web Vitals is hurting your SEO

Google uses CWV as a major ranking factor and as the basis of how fast your website feels to real users.

If your site is failing these metrics, it’s hurting your SEO, user experience, and conversions. Most developers chase PageSpeed Insights scores and completely miss the point—Core Web Vitals is about real user speed, not synthetic tests.

We can help you pass and maintain “good” metrics for all three Core Web Vitals benchmarks.

Our site speed work is focussed solely on getting a pass on Core Web Vitals.

The three Core Web Vitals Benchmarks are:

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)

Measures load speed. It tracks how long it takes for the largest visible part of your page (like a hero image or heading) to appear. The benchmark for “good” is 75% or more of your visitors with an LCP time of under 2.5 seconds

LCP can be thought of as how fast the perceived load time of the page is.

Interaction to Next Paint (INP)

Measures interactivity. It shows how responsive your site feels when users click, tap, or interact. A good score is an INP of under 200ms for 75% more of your visitors.

INP can be thought of as how responsive or quick a page is to provide visual feedback to inputs.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)

Measures visual stability. It detects unexpected layout shifts—like buttons jumping around as the page loads. This is a computed metric or calculated number, it’s not a time. Here a passing grade is 75% or more of your visitors with a CLS under 0.1

CLS is bit more difficult to explain but you would have experienced this when you’re on a website about to click on something and the page finishes loading and your mouse is no longer hover over the area you were about to click on.

These metrics reflect real user experience and are a direct ranking factor in Google Search. Passing them means a faster, smoother site—and better SEO and conversions.

TTFB or Time To First Byte is also critical

TTFB. is how quickly your server starts responding to a request and is the foundation of all fast loading sites.

This metric impacts every other metric and a poor TTFB will hurt the other metrics like FCP and LCP.

A “good” time to first byte is considering to be 0.8 seconds or less. TTFB varies greatly depending on the location of the visitor, whether the page is cached at the server and whether you’re using other caching techniques like edge caching. When a site is extremely slow, often there is an underlining issue causing high TTFB.

Poor TTFB metrics can also impact SEO in other ways. If your site is slow to respond to Google and other SEO crawlers, they’ll often timeout and leave your site. SEO rankings are directly tied to your TTFB performance.

Common CWV Problems We Solve

  • ❌ Poor LCP caused by oversized hero images, blocking scripts, or render delays
  • ❌ CLS issues from shifting layouts, fonts, or ads
  • ❌ Long TTFB or INP due to slow hosting, caching problems, or server-side rendering issues
  • ❌ Sites that pass Lighthouse or PageSpeed tests but fail field data audits

If you’re getting mixed signals from tools or your dev team says “your speed is fine” but Google says otherwise, we can cut through the noise.

If your site is failing these metrics, it’s hurting your SEO, user experience, and conversions. Most developers chase PageSpeed Insights scores and completely miss the point—Core Web Vitals is about real user speed, not synthetic tests.

Customer Reviews & Feedback

Excellent
5.0
Anthony L.
A personal approach is generally the best. We were unhappy with the performance of our Wordpress site on another larger Australian site. Brendan and his team made the process of swapping hosting painless (with no downtime), as well as several suggestions for improving performance.
Randall W.
They helped me with my websites and am super happy with the results. Really high quality and great value for money.
Alexander S.
Very helpful knowledgable company with excellent client support, would highly recommend.
Mother T.
I cannot recommend Brendan and his team highly enough. I was apprehensive about giving access to my website to people I had never met and had only seen their website online. But I had gone as far as my limited skills could take me and definitely needed help. Thank goodness I trusted them because they sped up my alarmingly slow Wordpress website beyond even what I had hoped. I am writing this review with a sincere, heartfelt thanks to them and an assurance for those who read this review that you can trust them completely to help you, too. They will not take advantage of you and you will be very happy with the results.
